A stag and doe is a party to raise funds for the couple about to be married. Usually everyone they know is invited. They buy tickets to attend, buy drinks at the bar or participate in activities. It helps the new couple begin marriage without or reduced debts.

Stag and Doe is a pre-wedding fundraiser for anyone wanting to attending. No invitation required. Yes, some who come will feel obliged to attend. Most however will just see it as an excuse to party. Everyone pays a couple of bucks to get in, buy drinks participate in the games. The revenue helps the couple get a start on their new life and the guest share in the excitement. These days much of it goes to pay for the expectations the wedding industry and tv shows create, rather than to be an investment they build on, as originally intended, when they began. Stag and Doe has acquired many alternate names for this common Canadian tradition. They include: Jack and Jill, Buck and Doe, Shag and even a Dosey Doe for a lesbian couple. Now we find a funny thing is happening… as the couple looks back, the Stag and Doe becomes a treasured memory. This Reddit posts reveals the happiness … “I threw a surprise wedding at my Stag and Doe. It was the best evening of our lives!”

Reviews & Being Said

It is a comedy that does not rely on an outrageous plot, on shock effect humour, on a dialogue of one-liners or set-ups and punchlines. Instead, the plot, humour and dialogue are so amusing because they are so true to life.”

“Crawford wrote the play during his stay in Blyth inspired by his own brother’s stag and doe in 2004 in Glencoe, Ontario. Crawford who grew up in Glencoe, has said, “Spending a summer in smalltown, rural Ontario,… I thought I would love to tell a story to these people, for them, about them”.

“Jell-O shooters, which apparently are de rigeur at such events.”

“Stag and Doe is a lovely, well-written comedy based on keen observational humour. It captures the nature of small town society in both the fierce rivalries it can generate but also in the sense of community. “
