Press Release: The ODD COUPLE

Metro Theatre Vancouver is thrilled to raise the curtain with Neil Simon’s classic comedy THE ODD COUPLE directed by Catherine Morrison on stage Oct 30 – Nov 14, 2021.

Whether you throw your potato chips on the floor or your poker chips on table, “The Odd Couple” will bring you a grin.

The play opens as a group of the guys are in the midst of their weekly poker game in the apartment of divorced sportswriter, Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it’s no wonder that his wife left him. The last to arrive is Felix Unger, who has just been thrown out by his wife. Felix is depressed and seems suicidal, leading Oscar to invite Felix to be his roommate. However, as Felix takes on the domestic mantle in the apartment and proves just how difficult he is to live with, Oscar is driven to the edge of madness. The final straw occurs when Felix refuses to follow through with a double-date Oscar has set up with the beautiful Pigeon sisters, who live in the same apartment block. The characteristics that drove each of them to leave their wives soon have them at each other’s throats.

“The Odd Couple is considered by many as one of the finest stage comedies ever written. I agree. Everyone can relate to both these men. Felix and Oscar, are as different as chalk and cheese. Neither of them are quite sure why their marriages fell apart– they move in together to save money for alimony and suddenly discover they’re having the same conflicts and fights they had in their marriages. Neil Simon’s comedy brilliance wins us early. And carries us throughout . ” Catherine Morrison, Director.

The Story

The Odd Couple charts the story of a well-meaning friend “Oscar” who out of loneliness, good-will and a desire to comfort his friend “Felix” offers him a place to stay, in his NY apartment.

“Felix” has been dumped by his wife of 12 years and is distraught. “Oscar ” has separated from his wife a few months prior. What could be more obvious then they set up house-keeping together? What could go wrong? The answer is everything. The only snag in this perfect plan is that one is a neat-freak and one is a slob. They drive each other to distraction with their completely opposite domestic habits.

The push-pull as they jockey for control under the eyes of their four poker-playing friends forms the crux of the story. But what really brings the relationship crashing down is “Oscar’s ” insistence on arranging a double-date with two English sisters living in their apartment building -“Cecily and Gwendolyn Pigeon’ .

“Felix’s” discomfort on this date is blatant and hilarious. No idea how to flirt with women; or even how to talk to them, he is laughably inept. After date night has crashed and burned, it is all out war with some of the best comic lines ever written.

Directors Talk

Catherine Morrison and the cast of The Odd Couple did an informal chat about the show immediately following the Friday, November 5, 2021 performance.

They discussed the challenges in doing this play with the re-formatted structure from a three act to a two act play ( particularly for the props team !). Then Catherine opened the session up for questions.

There was no additional charge for the Director’s Talk. Folks just stayed in their seats or move up a bit closer to the stage – allowing for social distancing at all times. it lasted about 20 minutes.
