About Pantomimes

Pantomimes date all the way back to ancient Rome.  They are actually not a British invention as is commonly indicated.  Pantomime comes from the Greek word pantomimos which meant a dancer who acted all the roles in the story:  panto meaning all and minos meaning imitator.

Pantomimes or Pantos as they are referred too, tell the story of good versus evil in which hope triumphs over adversity, after danger.  There are elements of comedic moments, double entendres, often great physicality, roles of gender reversal, dances and musical parodies all performed by characters derived from fairy tale plots.  Costumes and sets are bright and colourful  providing a stunning visual for the audience.

Pantos rely heavily on audience participation. The audience is complicit in finding, chasing and dealing with an evil baddie (villain) and a good heroine (fairy). Traditions include:

• Booing the baddie
• Cheering the heroine
• Oh No It Isn’t/Oh Yes It Is – debating plot points
• He/She’s Behind You – when characters  who have gone missing appear

The audience can shout out at any point during the production, and often do when the actors least   expect it,  resulting in a different show every performance.
