About Pantomimes

Pantomimes date all the way back to ancient Rome.  They are actually not a British invention as is commonly indicated.  Pantomime comes from the Greek word pantomimos which meant a dancer who acted all the roles in the story:  panto meaning all and minos meaning imitator.

Pantomimes or Pantos as they are referred too, tell the story of good versus evil in which hope triumphs over adversity, after danger.  There are elements of comedic moments, double entendres, often great physicality, roles of gender reversal, dances and musical parodies all performed by characters derived from fairy tale plots.  Costumes and sets are bright and colourful  providing a stunning visual for the audience.

Pantos rely heavily on audience participation. The audience is complicit in finding, chasing and dealing with an evil baddie (villain) and a good heroine (fairy). Traditions include:

  • Booing the baddie
  • Cheering the heroine
  • Oh No It Isn’t/Oh Yes It Is – debating plot points
  • He/She’s Behind You – when characters  who have gone missing appear

The audience can shout out at any point during the production, and often do when the actors least   expect it,  resulting in a different show every performance.

Plan to take in the joy and mayhem of this family tradition this holiday season.

Join actor, James Walker, who plays The Dame, Nanny as she hosts this special Director’s Talk immediately following the show on Friday, December 16th, 2022.  Some of the cast of Sleeping Beauty Wakes Up  will join James on stage to chat with the audience about:

  • The role in the story telling of Sleeping Beauty the Dame plays and why is she historically played by a man.
  • The six main components within a Panto Storyline
  1. Gender role reversal
  2. Good versus evil story line
  3. Slapstick and physical comedy.
  4. Colourful costumes and set.
  5. Audience participation.
  6. Plot derived from a fairy tale.

and how these are represented within the unique and original script by Catherine Morrison.

  • Pantomimes include a fair bit of improvisation with the audience. We will talk about the pros and cons of this constant interaction between actor and audience

After which, The Dame will open the session up for questions from the audience.

There is no additional charge for the Director’s Talk, just stay in your seats or move up a bit closer to the stage – allowing for social distancing at all times.
The session will last approximately 20 minutes.
