ETHNO-CULTURAL CASTING STATEMENT

We encourage submissions from artists with a broad range of backgrounds including, but not limited to: race, ethnicity, indigeneity, gender, body type, and sexuality. We encourage anyone to audition for any role as we will be casting based on suitability for the role.

If you have any conflicts, please note them on your audition application form. Please note that significant conflicts may affect your chances of being cast. Conflicts within the performance schedule cannot be accommodated.

REHEARSAL PERIOD

CHARACTERS:

Actors are welcome to submit for any role(s) they have interest in, regardless of age or gender. 

 

6 PRINCIPALS / 12 FEATURED

 

NARRATOR – (High belt to E, full range Mezzo) Female-presenting actor, any ethnicity, with a powerful rock singing voice who is strong on comedy and a strong mover. (Tenor vocalist if played by a male performer).

 

JOSEPH – (Tenor) Male-presenting actor, any ethnicity, to play the eleventh son of Jacob. Obviously his father’s favourite, Joseph early on shows a talent for interpreting dreams and telling the future. This gets him into trouble with his brothers when he predicts his future will include ruling over them. However, this talent saves his life when in Egypt he correctly interprets Pharaoh’s dreams. 

 

JACOB – (Baritone) JOSEPH’s father. Male-presenting character actor, any ethnicity, in his 50’s/60’s.

 

JOSEPH’S BROTHERS – (Mixed vocal ranges: Low A to High A, Basses down to E). Eleven male-presenting actors, any ethnicity, with strong singing voices and the ability to dance. Requires featured solo brothers for Country and Western style in “One More Angel in Heaven,”; Jacques Brel/Maurice Chevalier style for “Canaan Days,”; two brothers to play the BUTLER and BAKER; one very strong dancer with partnering ability (Adagio) in “The Apache.”

 

REUBEN – eldest brother, takes the lead in “One More Angel in Heaven”

 

SIMEON – second brother, takes the lead in “Those Canaan Days”

 

LEVI – third brother

 

JUDAH – fourth brother – Sings Harry Belafonte style in “Benjamin Calypso”

 

DAN – fifth brother

 

NAPHTALI – sixth brother

 

GAD – seventh brother

 

ASHER – eighth brother

 

ISSACHAR – ninth brother

 

ZEBULON – tenth brother

 

BENJAMIN – twelfth and youngest brother, accused of stealing the golden cup

 

POTIPHAR – (Baritone) A Noel Coward type character. Can be played by the actor

playing JACOB.

 

MRS. POTIPHAR – (Alto/Mezzo) Confident, strong, seductive. Can be played by

ensemble actor.

 

BUTLER – (Tenor/Baritone), played by a brother. Character role with a look that

contrasts with the BAKER.

 

BAKER – (Tenor/Baritone), played by a brother. Character role with a look that

contrasts with the BUTLER.

 

PHAROAH – (Tenor/Baritone range) Male-presenting actor, any ethnicity, strong singer,

Elvis Presley impersonator type who moves well and can represent that physicality.

 

ENSEMBLE

THE WIVES – (Mixed vocal ranges: Low A to High A, Sopranos to High C). Eleven female presenting dancers/singers, any ethnicity to play the wives of JOSEPH’S BROTHERS. Requires a very strong female dancer with partnering ability (Adagio) in “The Apache.”

 

CHILDRENS’ CHOIR

We will be casting twelve young performers for the choir. A separate audition date will be set. Please feel free to express interest and forward your submission at this time and you will be contacted when a date is confirmed. 

 

THE PROCESS 

 

FOR THE GENERAL AUDITIONS:

People will be assigned time slots as they submit online.

Expect to stay approximately 2-1/2 hours for the audition.

Upon arrival at the auditions, you will be greeted and checked in.

 

We ask you to prepare 1 musical theatre song in a pop-style similar to the show. Please bring a second, contrasting song as you may be asked to sing something else.

 

An accompanist will be provided.

PLEASE BRING SHEET MUSIC in the correct key.

All auditionees will participate in a group DANCE audition following their singing audition (groups of approximately 15). For the dance call please bring any dance shoes you have (tap, jazz, ballet, pointe, etc.) and/or lightweight running shoes. Wear clothing you are comfortable to dance in (specific dance wear is not required).

THE CALLBACKS

You may be asked to attend the call-back audition. Information will be sent to you in a separate communication. If you have not heard from us by the end of day, Friday, September 27, we sincerely thank you for auditioning, but unfortunately you have not been selected for this production.
