Our Season 57 Opener is A Risqué New Farce:

  A Comedy of Tenors

The theatre world has waited 30 years for comic genus Ken Ludwig to deliver this companion to the hilarious, Tony Award winning Lend Me a Tenor.  This time around we’re in 1930’s Paris, just hours before a sold-out concert.

In a posh hotel suite, perpetually frazzled producer Saunders learns that one of his headliners has cancelled, spiking his already stratospheric anxiety level and beginning a mad dash to find a replacement.  Saunders puts his son-in-law and now rising tenor and expectant father, Max on the case.

three tenors dressed in tuxesThe star of the concert, Tito, pompous and insecure at the same time, arrives with his flamboyant and feisty wife Maria.   Meanwhile, unbeknown to him, Tito’s daughter Mimi, a would-be actress, is in love with young tenor Carlo, whose youth and talent Tito finds particularly threatening.

Countless complications and emotional eruptions later, the concert hangs by a thread.  Then a potential savior appears in the person of Beppo, an operatic bellhop who is a dead ringer for Tito.  To complete the volatile mix, Tatiana, a sexually voracious Russian and former lover of Tito’s shows up in the mood for romance.

All the while, Max must balance his attempts to resolve all this chaos with the news that his wife Maggie has started having contractions with him still away in Paris.

some of the cast making funny faces on the pretend stageAs they say in life, timing is everything.  Precisely timed entrances and exits through multiple doors essential to any good farce add to the fun and frenzy of this show. Not to mention the underwear and a very evocative piece of tongue.

Comedy of Tenors is an engaging comedy that reinforces pandemonium at its finest.
