One of the eighteenth-century’s most enduring comedies, She Stoops to Conquer takes a comedic, often farcical, look at the behavior and marital expectations of the upper classes in England at this time. The play centers around the desire of Hardcastle, a wealthy landowner in the country, for his daughter, Kate Hardcastle, to marry the well-educated Charles Marlow.
Charles Marlow – (25-33) well-educated, sophisticated and a world traveller. Around working-class women he’s a lecherous rogue, but with higher class women he’s a nervous, bumbling fool.
George Hastings – (25-35). Friend of Charles. educated, sophisticated city gent, deeply in love with Constance, scheming to run away with her.
Tony Lumpkin –(needs to look 21, pudgie) Son of Mrs. Hardcastle, mischievous, fun loving, country bumpkin. Loves horse racing and the alehouse, where he lustily leads his pals in song. Come to audition prepared to sing a simple song a capella.
Mr. Hardcastle –. (45-65) Doting father of Kate, a level-headed countryman who loves “everything old” and hates the town and the “follies” that come with it.
Mrs. Hardcastle –(40-65) over-protective mother to Tony whom she spoils. She loves the town and the latest fashions.
Miss Kate Hardcastle – (20-30) Daughter to Mr. Hardcastle, and the play’s stooping-to-conquer heroine. She enjoys “French frippery” and the attributes of the town. Fun loving and schemes to achieve her ends.
Miss Constance Neville – (20-30). Loyal and obedient niece of Mrs. Hardcastle, heiress, and confidante of Kate.
Sir Charles Marlow – (45-65) father of Charles. A respectable and aristocratic fellow from the town.
Pimple – (any age) servant to Mrs. Hardcastle, friend to Kate.
Hannah – (20-45) Hardcastle’s dairymaid being trained as indoor servant. Actor will also play the pub’s serving wench. Ability to carry a tune would be an asset.
Diggory, Roger, Thomas (20-45) – Hardcastle’s farm hands being trained, not too successfully, to be sophisticated indoor servants. Actors will also play at least one other role. Must be able to carry a tune. Come to audition prepared to sing a simple song (Happy Birthday will do). Dance experience not necessary but an asset.
Requirements: Auditions will be cold readings from the script; the director will choose which scenes the group will read. Drop in, no appointment necessary. Open to all ethnicities
She Stoops to Conquer is a much beloved 18th comedy – a big boisterous, fast moving, mélange of misunderstandings and fun. Everything is slightly overblown and big. Actors should keep this in mind when auditioning.
Auditions will be readings from script sides available here:
Notes: This is a NON-EQUITY production. All roles at Metro Theatre, are Volunteer positions. People will be seen on a first come/first served basis, but be prepared that you may have to sit around and wait as you may be needed to read opposite someone else who is auditioning.
