Synopsis

American comedy/fantasy/farce, set in 1934 Hollywood at the Warner Brothers movie studio. They are doing a screen version of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream using some of the stars under contract at the time (Jimmy Cagney, Dick Powell etc.) Into the mix come the “real” “Oberon” and “Puck” from the Shakespeare play.

 

Characters Needed:

Louella Parsons – famed gossip columnist – 50’s – 60’s.

Max Reinhardt – German/Jewish director, escaping Nazi persecution- 30’s – 60’s (Appropriate accent)

Dick Powell– Hollywood leading man – 20’s – 30’s

Jack Warner – Head of studio, tough- 40’s – 60’s.

Daryl – Hollywood “Yes man” – 30’s – 50’s

Lydia –starlet with serious acting aspirations; girlfriend to Jack Warner; “Helena” in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”; 20’s – 30’s.

Oberon – Character from A Midsummer Night’s Dream – 30’s – 50’s.

Puck –character from A Midsummer Night’s Dream – 20’s – 40’s MALE

Olivia – heroine, playing “Hermia” in her first movie role – 20’s – 30’s.

Will Hays – Hollywood censor; bombastic narcissist-40’s – 60’s.

Joe E. Brown – contract movie player cast as “Thisbe” in film – 30’s -50’s.

Sam, Albert, and Harry Warner – brothers (and partners) of Jack – also double in various others roles – 30’s – 50’s.

 

Requirements:  Auditions will be cold readings from the script; the director will choose which scenes the group will read. Drop in, no appointment necessary.

Notes: This is a NON-EQUITY production. All roles at Metro Theatre, are Volunteer positions. People will be seen on a first come/first served basis, but be prepared that you may have to sit around and wait as you may be needed to read opposite someone else who is auditioning.

Tickets go on sale February 2018

REHEARSALS  begin February 2018 and continue until Opening Night. If you are cast, you will be required to become a Member of Metro Theatre and your 12-month Membership Fee of $20 will be collected at the first read-through.
